2026 EVENT RECAP

The 2026 Cape Milers Club World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger delivered an unforgettable evening of athletics on Friday, 10 April, at the Stellenbosch HS ACE track. In front of an enthusiastic crowd and in near-perfect racing conditions, athletes from school, club and elite ranks produced a night filled with personal bests, records and world-class performances across the programme.

One of the highlights of the evening was the appearance of Kenyan sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala, whose victory in the men's 100m electrified the crowd and added to the atmosphere of what was a truly special meeting. Supporters enjoyed t-shirt giveaways, elite international competition and a showcase of South African middle-distance running at its very best.

The meeting produced several standout performances and historic moments.

In the women's 3000m, Tayla Kavanagh delivered a dominant front-running performance, running solo from the gun to break the Cape Milers Club record in 8:46.86. Metronomic throughout all 7½ laps, the Adidas athlete was cheered home by an appreciative Stellenbosch crowd in one of the performances of the evening.

History was made in the men's 1500m when 16-year-old Tiisetso Malungane broke the long-standing South African U18 1500m record with an extraordinary 3:42.46 performance. Racing fearlessly in a stacked elite senior field, Malungane shattered a mark that had stood for more than four decades and firmly announced himself as one of the brightest young talents in South African athletics.

The elite men's 1500m provided one of the races of the night. Luan Munnik stormed to a sensational personal best of 3:34 to claim victory and top the World Athletics points standings for the meeting, securing the overall R20,000 winner's prize. Botswana star Tshepiso Masalela — already the fastest man over 1500m on African soil — pushed the pace in pursuit of a sub-3:30 performance before finishing a close second after a thrilling contest.

In the women's 1500m, Karabo More produced a breakthrough run of 4:05 to claim victory, set a new Cape Milers Club record and finish third overall on World Athletics points after a superb final 150m battle.

The meeting also saw another commanding front-running display from Jerry Motsau in the elite 3000m, adding further quality to a night that consistently delivered fast times and exciting racing.

Cape Milers Club would like to thank all athletes, coaches, supporters, officials and volunteers who contributed to the success of the event. Special thanks must go to our valued sponsors and partners — Gallo Images, Reunyte and The Thatch House Boutique Hotel — whose support helped make the event possible.
